ZAMBOANGACITY/09 June 2012 by Sheila Covarrubias—The city government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office is undertaking preparations for the city-wide celebration of “Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga” on June 25, a day that has been set as the start of the planting season based on a local ordinance.
Mayor Celso Lobregat has enjoined all sectors and agencies—both government and private groups—to participate in the tree planting activity that will be done in the city’s designated planting site at the Cesar C. Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong Pasonanca.
The celebration of Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga is pursuant to Ordinance 281 and is in observance of Philippine Arbor Day on June 25 every year. The ordinance mandates active public participation in tree planting activities.
It is also during this day when the city government tags identified century and heritage trees as part of the present administration’s thrust to protect and preserve the environment.
Mayor Lobregat stressed that the protection and preservation of the environment is a responsibility and obligation not only of the city government and other government agencies but of each and every individual.
Each and every resident of Zamboanga should do his/her part to protect and preserve the environment to ensure better future for the young generation, he added.
The OCENR under Engr. Rey Gonzales has set coordination meetings with the different agencies and institutions in preparation for the June 25 big event. A meeting is set on June 20 at 1pm at the entrance of the CCC Freedom Park in Abong-abong. (Sheila Covarrubias)
