JAKARTA, 27 June 2012 – Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan welcomed H.E. Mr. Mustafa Ibrahim Ali Al-Mubarak, the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ASEAN to receive his Letter of Credentials at the ASEAN Secretariat today.
During their discussion, Dr. Surin expressed his sincere condolences on the death of H.R.H. Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, Crown prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He later conveyed ASEAN’s commitment to closer cooperation with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Dr. Surin underlined the importance of partnership with GCC, and encouraged Saudi Arabia to channel the message to the GCC Secretariat to convene the 3rd ASEAN-GCC Ministerial Meeting in a GCC Member State. Of the six GCC MemberStates, five are represented in Jakarta, including Saudi Arabia.
Ambassador Mustafa welcomed all suggestions and assured that Saudi Arabia will actively be a part in enhancing its relationship with ASEAN and promoting ASEAN-GCC cooperation. Dr. Surin informed Ambassador Mustafa that the ASEAN Secretariat looks forward to working closely with him to further enhance the relationship between ASEAN and Saudi Arabia and the rest of the GCC Member State.
