ZAMBOANGA CITY, 11 July 2012 by Sheila Covarrubias—The historical Plaza Pershing teemed with people and activities yesterday, as the city government, through the City Health Office spearheaded activities in celebration of Nutrition Month.
A nutri-vegetable trade fair, formally opened by Mayor Lobregat and City Health Officer Rodelin Agbulos together with other department heads and members of the City Council, highlighted the opening of the nutri-month celebration.
The fair showcases vegetable products and other merchandise goods produced by various groups specifically members of the City Nutrition Committee. It will run until tomorrow, July 12.
Mayor Lobregat and Dr. Agbulos in their individual messages during the opening program said the celebration’s theme ““Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain” aptly recommends an increase in vegetable consumption to help counter micronutrient deficiencies and prevent diseases.
Lobregat thanked all participants to the nutrition month celebration and urged everyone to work with the local government in ensuring everybody’s health. “My administration commits to doing everything we can to deliver health services to our people, but as I always say the success of any government program depends on the cooperation and participation of the people.”
Also present during the opening program at the Plaza Pershing yesterday morning were Councilors Lilia Nuño, Rudy Lim, Rey Candido, Percival Ramos and Rogelio Valesco Jr., City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, City Social welfare Officer Francisco Barredo, other members of the City Nutrition committee, health workers, barangay nutrition scholars and barangay health workers, students and faculty of nursing schools and numerous others.
The activity yesterday, which kicked off with a motorcade, was also highlighted by a feeding program, the search for Queen of Nutrition 2012.
The Nutrition Month celebration is a nationwide event and is now on its 38th year. (Sheila Covarrubias)
