Germany to Intensify Ties with ASEAN

JAKARTA, 5 February 2013 – ASEAN welcomes Germany’s continued commitment to strengthen ties of friendship between ASEAN and Germany. Receiving  the German Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Dr. Georg Witschel, today at the ASEAN Secretariat, Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh expressed appreciation to Ambassador Witschel and to the Government of Germany for its commitment in moving cooperation between ASEAN and Germany as well as the valuable ties between ASEAN and EU. Germany also provides great assistance to ASEAN in the areas of narrowing development gaps as well as those under the three pillars of ASEAN Community.

Ambassador Witschel thanked the Secretary-General of ASEAN for receiving him and the Letter of Credentials as well as reiterated the commitment of Germany and its Embassy in Jakarta to work with ASEAN in targeted areas. Germany, he stated, wish to see a well functioned ASEAN thus becoming a well establish and prosper economic partner of Germany as well as of EU on a whole.

Ambassador Witschel also expressed his desire in working with the ASEAN Secretariat in exploring projects and joint activities, including the Germany’s offer to assist Myanmar’s officials prepare for their Chairmanship in 2014. SG Minh and Ambassador Witschel further exchanged views on regional and international economic and political-security issues.

The meeting was conducted when Ambassador Witschel presented his Letter of Credential to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Mr. Le Luong Minh. Ambassador Witschel is the first Ambassador to present the Letter of Credentials to the new Secretary-General of ASEAN since he took office on 9 January this year.  (Ref:  ASEAN Secretariat)
