ISABELA CITY/07 May 2013—Military authorities here said that an army major and soldiers were killed in an ambush that transpired in the vicinity of Sitio Pagtawanan, in a village in Al-Barka town, Basilan.

Col. Carlito Galvez, commander of the 104th Army Brigade based in Tabiawan, this city, confirmed the incident saying that the undetermined number of armed men were believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf Group.

A military report stated that the incident ccurred at past 4 yesterday afternoon in Makalang village, involving enlisted personnel of the 18th Infantry Battalion, and the Ex-Officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, Major Alin Kannung.  Kannung, who led the group and directed the pursuit operations in Al-Barka, was among the fatalities.

Meanhile, Col. Harold Cabunoc of the Civil Relations Group, in a Facebook post, stressed that “it was not an MILF-Army firefight.  Both sides are committed to the peace process.”

“We mourn the death of Al-Barka native, Maj. Kannung, who was aggressive in helping his people by helping the government and NGOs in delivering social services.  Our soldiers put up a good fight that lasted at least 3 hours,” Cabunoc added.  (The PhilSouth Angle)
