Climaco convenes security sector

ZAMBOANGA CITY/23 February 2014 by Sheila Covarrubias—Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday convened the security sector to tackle updates on peace-keeping efforts in the light of the upcoming Dia de Zamboanga celebration and more importantly the recent abduction in Mercedes and the spate of shooting incidents and other crimes.

The executive session discussed security details for the different activities that will be held in line with the 77th Dia de Zamboanga which will commence tomorrow, Feb. 24 and the progress in the rescue efforts for the 28-year old Sabrina Ikbala Voon abducted in barangay Mercedes last week as well as teacher Cathy Mae Casipong, abducted in Limaong last December 18.

Also discussed lengthily were measures undertaken to prevent further shooting incidents and other crimes as well as efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal drugs, illegal gambling, illegal logging, carnapping and other illegal activities including traffic violations.

The City Police Office with the support of the Regional Police Office-9 and the Task Force Zamboanga is exhausting all means to safely recover two abduction victims.

Mayor Climaco directed City Police OIC Director Col. Angelito Casimiro and Task Force Zamboanga Chief Col. Andrelino Colina to continuously coordinate with each other and come up with strengthened security measures to deter crimes and all forms of lawlessness.

She said the City Government remains fully supportive of the police and the military in peace-keeping efforts stressing that security of the people and the city is her administration’s primary thrust.

Mayor Climaco vowed to provide requirements of the police and even committed to help facilitate the acquisition of equipment needed in the anti-kidnapping campaign with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and other agencies at the national level.

She tasked City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. to work hand in hand with the local police for logistics needed in the implementation of the security plan for the Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

Climaco likewise sought the continuous support of the other law enforcement agencies such as the National Bureau of Investigation, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) in the stepped-up drive to thwart all forms of lawlessness in the city.

Present during the meeting Deputy Regional Police Director Col. Ramon Ochotorena, City Police OIC Director Casimiro, TFZ Chief Col. Colina, representatives from the NICA and NBI, City Administrator Orendain, representatives from the Department of Tourism and City Tourism Office and other agencies concerned.

Mayor Climaco underscored the need to toughen security measures specifically police visibility and beat patrols to deter lawless elements from carrying out their plans in the city.

She also reiterated her call for the residents to never cease supporting and cooperating with law enforcers saying that the fight against criminality should be a united effort of the police, military, local government unit and the citizens.
