ZAMBOANGA CITY/23 Febuary 2014 by April Rose Canete, Althea Sanson and Vernon Kenny Jimera– As part of the efforts for peace in Sulu, the Balik Barangay and rehabilitation in Maimbung has been initiated by Lunggang Baranggay Chairwoman Mariam Indal  to encourage internally displaced persons (IDP) to return to their homes in Lunggang, which was part of the conflict-affected area during the past two decades  of conflict.

As part of the program, their aim is to help the children move forward with their education despite the conflicts that hindered it. “Pinaprioritize ko ang mga bata makabalik sa skwela. Objective ko naman na hindi sila madehado sa pag-aaral,” Indal said.

Fatima Undug, Voice of Mindanao Program Coordinator and a student from Notre Dame of Jolo College, expressed her stand as a youth leader through a statement, “Sana magkaroon ng peace kasi yun lang naman ang hinahabol natin ngayon.”   She also encouraged the active participation of the youth towards activities held that promote peace.

Both Undug and Indal think that, sooner the peace will be felt again in Sulu. “Unti unti nalang, mase-sense mo na ang peace sa Sulu,” Indal stated.

Marine Battalion Landing Team 2 Lt. Col. Romulo Quemado II assured that the efforts of Peace are not only seen in Lunggang but in other parts of Sulu as well. “The services the security sectors offers to the district is very positive,” he added. MBLT is the Marine force whose area of responsibility covers Maimbung, Talipao, Siasi, Pata, and Pandami.

He also mentioned the active involvement of the community in maintaining the peace.  “Nagstabilize na ang peace at marami na nagno-normalize na activities,” he added.  (April Rose Canete, Althea Sanson and Vernon Kenny Jimera)
