Zambo athletes feted for sports awards

ZAMBOANGA CITY, 17 November 2015 by Sheila Covarrubias—Athletes who joined the recently concluded Philippine National Games and Phil-Asia Bodybuilding Championships held in Visayas were feted for their outstanding performance and for bringing honor and pride to Zamboanga City.

Mayor Beng Climaco spearheaded City Government officials and employees in honouring the athletes during the flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall Monday where they were formally presented by City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano.

The mayor hailed the athletes for their resiliency amidst the challenges of not having sports facilities in the city where to hone their craft. Zamboanga athletes continue to bring honor and pride to the city despite the difficulties they are beset with, she said.

For the Philippine National Games which was held in San Jose, Antique from November 12 to 14, Zamboanga City’s weightlifting, muaythai and pencak silat teams harvested a total of 27 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 17 bronze medals.

Likewise, the city’s representatives to the 4th Phil-Asia Bodybuilding Championship “Universe Qualifier” held in Cebu City from Nov. 11-12 reaped awards. Richard Guerrero of Tumaga -1st place in the 23 and below category; Claudio Sardan of Tetuan- 2nd place in the Mr. Physic tall category; Joey Acar of Camino Nuevo- first place in the novice category and 2nd place in tall category while Roger Atilano of Pasonanca-4th place in the senior master category.

In the final Mr. Universe competition, Acar ranked 5th place in the tall category and Sardan finished 6th in the Physique Category.

Based on an ordinance, the City Government has set aside funds for the grant of incentives to medal haulers in local, national and international events.

The documents for the payment of the incentives are now being prepared for the immediate release of the cash incentives.

Last week, the city also honoured the over 100 athletes who reaped medals in the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg held in Koronadal, South Cotabato from October 24 to 30. Zamboanga City placed third in the overall medal standing.

Meanwhile, weightlifters Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia also made waves in the Asian weightlifting competition held in Phuket, Thailand and are presently undergoing training for another international competition. (Sheila Covarrubias)
