Mangrove tree planting, banca turnover set in Simariki

ZAMBOANGA CITY/19 August 2016 by Sheila Covarrubias—Government  agencies and non-government organizations formed a climate change adaptation alliance and spearheaded the Simariki Community Mangrove Planting and banca turnover, today at Simariki Island in barangay Talon-talon.

 

The activity kicked off with the symbolic turnover of 49 banca units to 50 beneficiaries followed by the community mangrove planting which is in line with the Simariki Coastal Resource Management project.

 

The event began with the signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with representatives from the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), ZABIDA and the Talon-talon barangay Council as signatories.

 

The event is a joint undertaking of the ZABIDA, City Agriculturist Office, CENRO-DENR in partnership with the SISBA community.

 

The creation of the ZC Civil Society Organization-Climate Change Adaptation Alliance is to promote climate change advocacy and help mitigate the effects of climate change.

 

Among the officials who graced the event are ZABIDA chairperson Fr. Angel Calvo, City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, CENRO Ben Acana, NCIP-OIC Director Engr. George Jocutan, Talon-talon barangay chairperson Carmir Candido, SISBA Community tribal leader Imam Anibal Quraiz and several others. (Sheila Covarrubias)
