ZAMBOANGA CITY, 22 June 2017 by Sheila Covarrubias—Chavacano songs are requested by the Zamboanga City Government to be played by local broadcast stations, as a City Council resolution seeks promotion of Chavacano songs during the celebration of the Dia del Fundacion de Chavacano on Friday, June 23.

Resolution 893, authored by Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar, was unanimously approved on June 20.

The Chavacano language dates back to June 23, 1635 when the cornerstone of the Fort Pilar was laid.

Held every 23rd of June thru Ordinance 374, the Dia de Fundacion Chavacano celebrates the founding of the Chavacano language, and recognizes its role as one of the pillars of the Zamboangueño culture. It is highlighted by activities that focus and emphasize, and preserve and promote the usage of Chavacano, including its culture and heritage, by all residents. (SC)
