Farmers and other residents of the village of Las Arenas in Pantukan, Compostela Valley Province, used to cross the Tagugpo Creek over a rough-hewn wooden bridge (inset) to reach the community central area. When the creek swelled on rainy days, the old bridge became impassable and residents’ access to markets, schools and basic services was restricted. After the recent construction of a 27-meter suspended footbridge over the creek, by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program in partnership with the municipal government of Pantukan, the 1,170 residents of Las Arenas are assured of a safer crossing in all weather. Under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council, GEM will implement the construction of up to 850 additional community infrastructure projects, including small water systems, warehouses, solar dryers, boat landings, trading centers, and bridge and roadway upgrades, in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao.
