ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines/26 January 2012—The regional office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Western Mindanao recently received the Philippine Quality Award (PQA) from President Benigno Aquino III at Malacañan Palace this week.
“Time and again, the world has witnessed demonstrations of the extraordinary skill and ability of Pinoys. Our steadfast pursuit of quality, combined with core competencies such as a strong work ethic, an ability to think outside the box, and a passion to excel in our respective crafts, distinguishes Filipinos in the global community as excellent workers,” the President said, citing the four distinguished organizations in the country, among them the DOST-IX.
The low-key yet accomplished DOST-IX emerged as one of the recipients in the 14th cycle of PQA. Having been recognized for having demonstrated serious commitment to improvement in order to achieve quality excellence.
Regional Director Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, together with DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo and Undersecretary Carol M. Yorobe, received the symbol of the prestigious recognition at the Rizal Ceremonial Hall, Malacañan Palace during the awarding ceremony on 20 January this year.
The PQA is the highest level of national recognition for exemplary organizational performance established through RA 9013. It is a national quality award comparable with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) of the United States of America. One of the objectives of PQA is to recognize organizations in both the private and public sector which excel in quality management and overall organizational performance thus providing Philippine industries with benchmarks and models to emulate. It also aims to promote standards in organizational performance comparable to those of leading business abroad, pursuant to the country’s effort to be globally competitive.
The PQA focuses on seven (7) criteria categories: (1) leadership; (2) strategic planning; (3) customer and public focus; (4) measurement, analysis, knowledge management; (5) workforce focus; (6) process management, and (7) results.
Aside from DOST-IX, another recipient from the public sector was the DOST’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) in Bicutan while two (2) private organizations namely, Automotive Airconditioning Technology Philippines Inc. (Laguna) and NYK-TDG EBusiness Corp. (Taguig City) were recipients of PQA’s Recognition for Proficiency in Quality Management. (Ref: DOST IX)
