6.9 quake hits Negros Oriental, Cebu, and Mindanao areas

CEBU CITY, Philippines/06 February 2012—A 6.9 magnitude tectonic earthquake hit Negros Oriental and Cebu and other parts of southern Philippines shortly before noon today, as authorities here are still gathering data as to the possibility of any casualty in affected areas.  This was reported by the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) in its Bulletin 3 as of 2:30 in the afternoon.

The quake started at about 11:49 in the morning, and severely struck about 5 km, N 41 degrees west of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.  At the same, Dumaguete and Villahermoso town in Negros Oriental was hit at intensity 7, La Carlota City and La Castellana in Negros Oriental, and Argao, Cebu at intensity 6.

The quake was at intensity 5 in Roxas City; Dao and Ivisan,Capiz; Iloilo City; Ayungon, Negros Oriental; Kanlaon City; Lapu-Lapu City; Guimaras; Cebu City; San Carlos City; Bacolod City; Sagay City; Tagbiliran City; Candoni, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

It was at Intensity 4 in San Jose de Buenavista, Pandan, Anini-y, Patnungon, Antique; Kalibo, Aklan; Sipalay, Negros Occidental; Dipolog City, Ormoc City.

Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; Legaspi City, Albay; Carmen, Cagayan de Oro; Tacloban City; Catbalogan; St. Bernard, Southern Leyte; Masbate City, Masbate; Cagayan de Oro City, were affected at Intensity 3.

‘Though light,  Cabid-an, Sorsogon; Borongan, Eastern Samar, Mambajao, Camiguin had a quake with intensity 2, while it was Intensity 1 in Pagadian City.

These information, along with precautionary warnings to residents of coastal areas in Cebu and Negros Oriental, were announced by the NDRRMC, the Office of the Civil Defense, and the various Locl Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (LDRRMCs) from all levels of local government units.

The Department of National Defense – Philippines and the  DOST-PHIVOLCS declared that they are closely monitoring the situation and any new significant development will be immediately relayed to all concerned.  (NIC/TPSA)
